Canning Tomatoes Part 1

It All Starts with a Seed

In the early spring 2010 I shared with you some planting tips I learned online at some of my favorite websites. As the seasons turned from spring to summer I planted the tomatoes, enjoyed watching them grow, harvested for daily menu use and today I am going to share with you how to process the tomatoes the HOT BATH method of canning.  Below you will find the video that started it all.  This video shows the basic steps to starting tomato plants.

Canning Tomatoes Part 1

What you will need to process a harvest of tomatoes using the hot bath method is featured in the video below.  Let me walk you through my gardens and share with you where I planted and grew those seed starters featured in the video above.  I will outline what you will need to preserve your own harvest of tomatoes.

Supply List:

  • 33 quart ( or larger) canner pot with lid.
  • 1 jar lift ( included in canner.
  • 1 15 quart or larger pot
  • 1 5 quart pot
  • large spoon
  • ladle
  • slotted spoon
  • tongs
  • new lids / seals
  • recycled canning  jars ( at least a dozen quart size)
  • canning  jar lift
  • canning funnel

NOTE : Always harvest your tomatoes on the day you plan on processing them.  If you have to wait a day store the produce in a cool dry location.

I will post Part 2 of Canning Tomatoes featuring easy How-to directions in my next post on this blog.  Be sure to leave a comment if you have any questions I didn’t cover in the video above.

My goal is to inspire you to get out and grow something that you can bring to your kitchen for you, your friends and family to enjoy!

I’m Celebrating Garden Networking!

I was ecstatic to find during my daily visit over to my Facebook site at the BGgarden.com to find that I had hit 1,000 friends. The BGgarden Facebook page is where I share what is going on in my life of gardening following the same shares here on my blog. Now I know that it’s only a number but this is quit an event for me. My social media sites at Facebook and Twitter are like a Garden Club to me. There is nothing more exciting to click over after sharing a piece of my garden life online to find someone (possibly from another country) has left a comment. What a wonderful way to be inspired and to educate people about gardening in general. I can’t think of anything more rewarding then sharing life!

Networking the Garden on my Favorite Sites!

To celebrate this event I am giving away a few ‘Party Favors’. Each ‘friend’ who comments on the note found over at BGgarden Fan Page will be entered in the random drawing. Two of my ‘friends’ who are picked will receive a special gift from me.

Passion in the Harvest

Hand Full of Harvest
I do believe that today I picked the last of my large harvest of tomatoes for Summer ’10.  My five gallon bucket was filled to the top with a collection of some of the best tomatoes I have ever grown.  The tomatoes that are have produced above and beyond my expectations include Pink Brandywine, Amish Pasta, Italian Roma and Japanese Black Trifele .

I’m sadden to see the end of the ‘large loads’ even after all the work of canning to preserve the harvest for winter use. Anxiety fills me as I think of the grow adventure that is ahead of me in the months to come as we prepare the greenhouse where I can now say I grow year-round.

If you have a true passion for what you do, your love will shine through.   Nothing can come between you and your passion.   Wishing you the best of Harvest Season – Bren

Sinful Veggie: Chocolate Zucchini Cake

Chocolate Zucchini Forest Cake

It is hard for me to imagine there is anything healthy in this yummy helping of Chocolate Zucchini Forest Cake in the photo above. It is true, not only does it have eggs in the ingredients it has zucchini. Leave it to me to make it sinfully and loaded with calories!

Growing what we eat has always been super fun in our home but it is especially fun for the kids when I can make something as yummy as the chocolate cake. Just remember that in moderation everything is good for you.... right?! The collection of images above is where I grew my zucchini this year. It is the first year to have raised beds in our garden and we added them to the greenhouse landscaping.
