Garden Tip #g2b11

While in Little Rock for the Garden2Blog event with P.Allen Smith I was asked to share a quick tip about gardening. The first thing that came to mind was something super easy and fun for all ages to grow.

You don’t need soil, just a little bit of love to grow yummy sprouts in your kitchen or garden. I share how-to tips at this blog entry all about my first try at growing sprouts.

Helping Communities Grow Starts In School Gardens

Carol & Kerrie are at it again … spreading their love for growing around this Autumn with the Seed Keeper Project.   I had the privilege of speaking with them this afternoon to get the facts on what I could do to make a difference in the school of my choice.

The Seed Keeper Ladies in their booth at IGC11 / Chicago Navy Pier

Here’s how you can make a difference in the garden at your favorite school :  Each Monday The Seed Keeper Company is going to list five states they randomly pull out of a seed keeper kit. And you thought Monday’s couldn’t be any funnier with #gardenchat and all! If the state your  school is located in that you would like to nominate for the Seed Keeper Project is chosen please submit the schools at that time on their Facebook page.   Go to The Seed Keeper Company on Facebook where the states will be listed.  You have until Friday of that week to list the school of your choice from the five states chosen on Monday. On Friday of each week the Seed Keeper Girls will place all of the nominations in a Seed Keeper and draw a winner for each of the 5 states.  The winning schools receive a Seed Keeper and Certificate recognizing their school gardening efforts as well as a note letting them know you are responsible for their win.The Seed Keeper Project will conclude the week of December 21, 2012.  You can read all about this project on the The Seed Keeper Project Page.

Above is a photo of the beautiful Garfield Park Childrens’ garden I toured this summer with the Garden Writers Association .  I just love the herbs planted in this beautiful recycled tires that the children painted.

Be sure to check out my podcast with Carol and Kerrie from the Seed Keeper Company explaining all the details about this school garden project.    If you have any questions be sure to visit their site or you can leave me a question in this blog post.

iCloud I Like

Cozy Slippers, Coffee, Dahlias, and my icloud for sharing it all

This is the one cloud that is truly creating continuous sunshine in my Apple world and I hope to share with you what I’ve experienced in this short post.  I recently became an Apple user and have had a 90% positive experience since purchasing an Iphone and Ipad for business use.     These products have become so much more then a business adventure with the introduction of applications like the icloud.

First note you must be an Apple user to be able to use this application.  When you sign up for iCloud for your Apple devices  you automatically get 5GB of free storage. <bonus… right?!> You have to be sure to do all current updates on your mobile devices before these options will work properly.  I updated my iphone / ipad from my PC on Wednesday after my brother told me about his positive experience with the icloud.  If you don’t have the new iPhone, the 4S, you’ll need to install the latest mobile operating system, iOS 5, a free update that will require hooking up the device to a computer.  The new beta, which is available to all users with an Apple ID, features web-based version of Mail, Contacts, Calendar and photo sharing. luding iTunes Match.

What does icloud do now that I have it updated : When you turn on the icloud fuction in your app settings you will now be able to view your images on any devices using wifi. HOWEVER,  I can’t figure out where this function is allowing me to view the images on my PC if it is at all.  The official apple webpage says that it works on PC so I will have to do more research and get back with you as soon as possible.   As for now the icloud is making it easier to share images from my growing experience.

By the way,  the 10% negative about Apple experience I mentioned in the beginning of this share has to do with camera to Apple processing which save  a totally different blog entry.

I’d like to hear from you if you use any Apple products for garden related networking.  Be sure to leave me a comment below.

Friday Flaunt in Autumn

These Will Be Missed …. Frost Arrives Tonight

The warm growing outdoors days are numbered as we enter mid-October.  I can honestly say I am missing the warm weather already and I will moss the flowers that are blooming to this day.  A few of those blooms are in the collage above.

5 feet tall knock out roses welcome the autumn color in the photo above.

Today Red Arrived In My Autumn Garden

Outdoor time today was spent loading up the garden cart and hauling the last of the containers to the greenhouse.   The local weather is showing the temperature dropping to 33* at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning.   I’m sadden but also excited to start growing under cover.

Look Whats’ Holding On After Minimum Watering and Cold : Diamond Frost by Proven Winners

In the image above is one of the loads of containers being taken to ‘safety’ from the frost in the greenhouse.  These diamond frost annuals have been thriving in my home & garden for 3 years now.   I can’t wait to use these at Christmas in my home container design.

Tough Enough for 40*F Weather

These is one of the petunias’ I grew from seeds I received from my greenhouse sister Glenda last year.  It was labeled silver but the autumn color sure is purple.   I hope you will check out Fertilize Friday over at Glenda’s site : http://www.tootsietime.com
