- The small collection of books that never make it to the shelf in my office.
Is there anyone who can say they don’t own a few good books that are hard to part with? Coming from me, that is a major statement because I’m not a huge fan of just ‘whipping’ out a book and enjoying a “good read”. Believe it or not , I am more of a picture book kind of gal. Please don’t hold that against me because I would rather click around the internet or flip through one of my favorite magazines loaded with colorful images. When I say I’ve found a GOOD READ it is serious because it means the book has captured my attention and has bonded my hands that always give into the urge to play in the dirt. A book that has black and white photos and is still sitting on my desk is truly something to tell my garden connections or friends who just want to live a little more energy wise about.
Energy-Wise Landscape Design by Sue Reed is more then just a book to me. This book is a way of living that will benefit your home and your family. Th handbook has made my ‘Holiday Gifts for the Gardener’ list because it is more then just a one time read. This publication has become a major resource tool for me in my adventures in growing year-round in my greenhouse and as I work toward a totally functional and environmentally sound landscaped garden & home. Sue Reed, who has helped hundreds of homeowners create comfortable, beautiful, energy-efficient landscapes for 25 years truly shares her love for what she does in Energy – Wise Landscape Design – a new approach for your Home and Garden. For those of you who do not consider yourself a DIY type of person I think this book will encourage you to try your hand at some basic energy saving renovations like simple lighting advice for your landscape or how about mowing a ‘tidiness’ stripe?
I share weekly about my greenhouse adventure with hopes of inspiring others who want to continue to grow past their a allotted growing season. This book is a wonderful resource for those hoping to build their own cost efficient greenhouse or conservatory. Basic principles of building such as building an energy – wise foundation or the landscape that should go around these structures or any structure as far living energy smart goes.
The image to the right shows the beginning of the landscape project over in the greenhouse area of my garden. We had designed this area with function and a low budget in mind. The project including the foundation around the greenhouse was completed in late May of this year. I had received a copy of Sues book in late July and had a boost of confidence to find that we had created a energy-wise design as outlined in this book. Did you know that trees and shrubs planted in the proper placement in your landscaping can actually help with heating bills? My next adventure in the Landscape project featured on that image is to incorporate some of the principles using shrubs and trees outlined in chapter 12.
WOW… this book has truly got me sharing! Now, if you have any questions or thoughts on this subject I would like to invite you to leave me a comment below. I enjoy hearing your feedback when it comes to ideas on saving more money so I can buy more plants!
