Seed Swap – Toledo Grows

I must admit I’m STARTING to feel a little overwhelmed with all the garden events I have been a part of in the past two weeks and the lack of time I have to share all of the events with you. Please keep checking back to my blog because I promise to get all my images up loaded to share with you hoping to inspiring you to GROW SOMETHING this spring.  What better way to start inspiring  to grow then to share my first EVER seed swap put on by the Toledo Growers at WildWood Metro Park.

Collage from my first ever SEED SWAP put on by the Toledo Grows Group

It has been a some time since I shared a collage on my blog featuring a garden event.  Today I attend the Toledo Grows Seed Swap event and had a blast feeding my addiction to seeds.

Seeds, Seeds , and more seeds!

Top left photo : I got to meet one of my “fans’ from the BGgarden facebook page.  The Wild Ones Native Plants, Natural Landscaping had a wonderful display featuring seeds that grow well in our area.  Where else can you get better advice then from growers in your area.  I am totally addicted to Native Plants!   I brought home some Mountain MINT and Rough Blazingstar ( Liatris Aspera) to add along our wood line garden I have been building up near the Greenhouse landscaping project.

Second row – 1st image – Super excited to find a collection of seeds that were donated by Natures Crossroads out of Indiana.  I recently received a seed savor kit from them after meeting them via my blog.  I can’t wait to add these PINK BRANDYWINES to my tomato collection this summer.

Does that GREEN Citronella plant stand out on the RIGHT hand lower section of the collage above? DID THAT EVER smell like summer.  I could have stood there all day talking plants with Toledo Greenhouse grower from Bench’s.

Lower left corner features a photo of the fairy garden put together by Benzell’s Greenhouse in Toledo, Ohio.  This grower is designing wire arbors and other tiny garden treasures to add to your fairy gardens.

What to Expect

When I first got an update on my blog ‘comments’ about the seed swap I had no idea what to expect.  I actually had SECOND THOUGHTS about attending. SERIOUSLY—-  I have so many seeds in my greenhouse growing and in the file box for this summer planting.  My second thoughts were ‘What do you bring to a seed swap?” …. YES… I KNOW!   I did grab a few of my Sweet Pea seeds I had left over from last years gardening.  I wish I would have brought more just because I felt  a little guilty bringing home so many seeds from this event.  Upon entering this event I was handed a brown paper bag and a handful of red tickets to swap for seeds! The next time I will bring a recyclable bag to carry my garden treasures in.   I am looking forward to the next event sponsored by the Toledo Growers.  It was a blast sharing garden information with those who enjoy gardening.  Be sure to visit their Facebook Site and become a FAN so you can follow updates on what events are next this year.

WHAT I LOVED most about this event:

1. I LOVED seeing all the younger gardeners. YES, there were many kids checking out the seed collections available which is always wonderful to see. When I say younger I am talking those 20 – early 30′s group of gardeners.   It was wonderful to see so many getting involved.   Gardening can be FUN and HIP!

2.  I LOVED seeing what everyone was giving away.  I learn so much today talking to the volunteers at each table.  I was told Rutgers is a good tomato for canning.  I always thought it was just an easier grower because EVERYONE use to ask for it when I worked at a greenhouse.   I also picked up some BLACK Radish to grow after a volunteer told me about her grandparents growing this type of radish.

3.  I LOVED getting out and being around so many happy people despite the not so easy to travel in weather we were experiencing this weekend.

4. I LOVED meeting a few people I have met on the internet via sharing on my blog and Fan Page.

SO MUCH MORE ……

I have so much more to share from today’s event.  I hope you will stop back soon as I share images from the Toledo Botanical Gardens Events from today.  Did my seed swap share encourage you to seek out a garden event in your area.  I spent too many years not looking out behind my garden.  Today I am enjoying being connect to the REAL garden WORLD!

see you soon! ♥ Bren

Bren, What a fun time for you. We had a garden event last weekend, Seedy Saturday, there were lectures by prominent plants persons , and tons of displays I was there as a master garden to answer the publics gardening questions. It was lots of fun even though no one has planted anything yet.

That sounds like fun! I need to get some seeds started!

  5. I just know that I would have been going crazy, selecting seeds and figuring out where to plant them later. It is so nice to hear that young people are really into gardening.

Seeds swaps would be so much fun. I often swap with my family, but I bet you can get some great things by swapping with so many people.

Super fun Susy – I am going to share in my next post a few of the treasures I brought home. I think the ‘swapping ‘ of information was even more fun then what I took home in my basket. Thanks for visiting!

Shame on you for creating another terrific post! Awesome stuff, keep up the good work. I see a lot of potential! I wonder if you are an active user with any social networking sites like Digg or Stumble Upon?

    • Bren says:

Not a big fan of Stumble Upon and never tried DIGG. Maybe I will do some ‘diggin’ once my garden is all in this year as free time allows. Thanks for stopping by!

Gday, Just wanted to show you that the website isn’t launching properly on my iphone. Do you know if there’s some setting I will need to use to make it show properly? Everything is out of line.

I am a Director of a new school on the Eastside of Toledo and was wondering if anyone would be interested in forwarding any unwanted seeds. We are starting a garden at our school and we calling it the “Patriots Garden”. I have sent in grants to help fund our garden but we will accept any seeds, and garden tools. Our school name is L. Hollingworth School for Talented and Gifted, 824 Sixth St., Toledo, OH 43605. Please feel free to give me a call at 567.249.3723 if you have any items that you are interested in donating. Thank you in advance!!!
